Phentermine is a prescription appetite suppressant approved for short-term weight loss, alongside diet, exercise and behavior change. At Regal Weight Loss, phentermine is prescribed only after an in-person evaluation at our Mesquite office, with weekly coaching and blood pressure checks, as one part of a complete medical weight loss program.
GLP-1 injections get most of the headlines, but they aren't the right fit or the right price for everyone. Phentermine has been prescribed for weight loss in the U.S. for decades. It's a once-a-day pill, generic versions are widely available, and for the right patient it can make the first weeks of a new eating plan much easier. At Regal, it's one tool inside our medical weight loss programs, never a prescription on its own.
What is phentermine?
Phentermine is a stimulant-type medication (a sympathomimetic amine) that reduces appetite. You may know it by brand names such as Adipex-P or Lomaira. It's a Schedule IV controlled substance, so it's available only with a prescription and medical follow-up.
The FDA label approves phentermine as a short-term aid, a few weeks, for adults with obesity, used together with a reduced-calorie diet, exercise and behavior change. It's usually taken once a day in the morning, because a late dose can keep you awake.
Who is a good candidate for phentermine?
Phentermine may be an option for adults with:
- A BMI of 30 or higher, or
- A BMI of 27 or higher plus a weight-related condition such as controlled high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol
- A commitment to the nutrition, activity and habit changes that make results last
It isn't for everyone. You should not take phentermine if you have:
- Heart disease, including coronary artery disease, stroke, irregular heart rhythms or heart failure
- High blood pressure that isn't under control
- An MAO inhibitor taken now or in the last 14 days
- Hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) or glaucoma
- Agitated states or a history of drug misuse
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Tell your provider about every medication and supplement you take. Phentermine shouldn't be combined with other weight loss drugs or stimulants unless your provider directs it, and alcohol can make side effects worse.

Is Acxion the same as phentermine?
Acxion is a brand of phentermine sold in Mexico, and many families in the Dallas area know it by that name. The active ingredient is the same, but in the U.S. phentermine is legal only with a prescription from a U.S.-licensed provider. Regal doesn't sell, import or dispense Acxion. Don't take phentermine bought without a prescription, on social media or brought from another country: you can't be sure what's in it, and no one is checking your heart and blood pressure while you take it.
What happens after phentermine?
Because phentermine is short-term, what you build while you take it matters most. Your weekly coaching with a certified nutritionist focuses on meals, portions and routines that keep working after the medication stops. If you need more support, your provider may recommend other parts of the Regal program.

Phentermine vs. Ozempic: which is better for weight loss?
They work differently. Phentermine is a daily pill that reduces appetite and is approved for short-term use. How long can you take phentermine?
The FDA label approves phentermine for short-term use, a few weeks. Your provider decides the dose and how long you take it, and checks how you're doing along the way.
Is phentermine addictive?
Phentermine is a Schedule IV controlled substance because it can cause dependence if it isn't taken as prescribed. Take it only as directed, never take extra doses, and never share it.
What are the side effects of phentermine?
The most common are dry mouth, trouble sleeping, restlessness, a faster heart rate, higher blood pressure, constipation, dizziness and an unpleasant taste. Get medical help right away for chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, swelling in your legs or ankles, or a racing or irregular heartbeat.
